We departed Portsmouth Boating Center for our next stop at the Atlantic Yacht Basin Marina (AYB) in Chesapeake VA. Our destination wasn't very far but we had to navigate several bridges and to also transit the Great Bridge Locke. We were delayed 45 minutes at the Gilmerton Bridge due to the adjacent railroad bridge closing for a train. The delay at Gilmerton Bridge caused us to miss the 4 o'clock opening of the locke. The locke tenders let us waited inside the locke until the next opening at 5 o'clock. We were the only ones in the locke. This was the first time we had ever been in a locke - very interesting. AYB was a short motor after the locke and where we will spend the next few days. We wanted to anchor our way down the ICW but our motor problems and now the cold weather have dictated otherwise. With the forecasted cold front and nights in the teens we have decided to marina hop until (hopefully) reaching warmer weather.
