02/22/2009

We left the stone Island Anchorage shortly after 5:00 AM this morning and are making good time under power. The weather forecast says we will have wind this afternoon.

Today is a long jump of 87 miles and we need to make it to Isla Isabella before dark.

Underway again

02/21/2009, Anchorage in front of stone island

We left Marina Mazatlan around 1:15 and were able to sail almost the whole way to the anchorage in front of Stone Island.

Stone Island is part of the entrance channel to the commercial port of Mazatlan which is about 9 miles south of the harbor with the small boat marinas. We were able to sail most of the way inside the islands that face the gold zone and malecon of mazatlan.

The anchorage is very secure under present conditions (NW winds) and should be very comfortable tonight. There are half a dozen other boats in here as it is supposed to be a very good spot for watching the fireworks associated with Carnival.

Our plan is to get underway early tomorrow morning and make it to Isla Isabela before dark.

Safe and Secure in Mazatlan

02/08/2009, Marina Mazatlan

We arrived here in Mazatlan yesterday around noon and are tied up at Marina Mazatlan for a few days.

Its warm here and humid. Cabin temperature got up into the 80s yesterday and at dusk condensation was running off of the stainless steel on deck.

We are starting to see more and more boats with awning in use so its probably about time that we start thinking about getting some sort of sun protection for the boat when anchored or in a marina.

After ouir first couple of meals here we have made an important discovery. The shrimp here in Mazatlan are fantastic.

John and Jim grew up in Florida were high quality fresh shrimp are taken for granted. When John moved to California he was appalled at what passed for shrimp in most restaurants. Mazatlan shrimp is definitely up to Florida standards.

The pleasure boat marina is separate from the main port (about 8 miles north) so it requires a bus ride to get to the historic part of town. Fortunately several bus lines run right in front of the marina complex so we wont have any problem getting into town today to do a little sightseeing. We are also about due for trips to costco and walmart.

We will try to get some of our recent photos and videos uploaded to the blog while we are here and have reasonable internet access.
