The parks department in all of the Australian states we have visited are very resourceful in the things they come up with to both protect the sites and accommodate their visitors' needs. This smokers' station was at the foot of the wharf. It provides old film cans for smokers to carry with them on their walking tour for use as ashtrays. It would seem like the supply of film cans must be diminishing quickly since very few people buy film any more. At $16 a pack the number of Australian smokers is declining but not as quickly as the world production of film cans. I imagine they will need to come up with a new solution before too long, or just make the island a no smoking zone.
