Exploring Inland
28 August 2011 | Mountains of Humboldt County
Scotts
Each morning we checked the weather report and decided to stay in port another day. We went to a play at one of the local theatres. Vicki & Lare Byers have a friend, Joe LaVash, who lives way up in the mountains, we rented a car and drove on a winding road to a very remote area on an Indian reservation. We first met Joe, in Salvador where we were both crewing for other cruisers, on different boats. After graduating with a degree in Solar Architecture thirty years ago, Joe moved to the mountains with his wife and 2 small children and built a nice home. He also and designed and built a sophisticated hydroelectric plant that meets all his energy needs. Joe owns a welding company that specializes in bridges. He travels all over the country building, retrofitting and repairing bridges.
Joes philosophy is best described by the chorus of one of his favorite songs, “Spanish Pipedream” by John Prine.
“Blow up your TV, throw away your paper
Go to the country, build you a home
Plant a little garden, eat a lot of peaches
Try an find Jesus on your own”
The final chorus is:
“We blew up our TV, threw away our paper
Went to the country, built us a home
Had a lot of children, fed 'em on peaches
They all found Jesus on their own”
Great song. You can find a version of it on YouTube. Joe is now preparing his own sailboat to go cruising.
Vicki B, Lare, Joe, and a local drop in musician, Ethan, played guitars and flute and generally enjoyed a jam session, followed by a barbeque of our remaining tuna steaks.
