On the Hudson

Castle at Bannerman Island
Once our sleepy-head crew rousted, we left Newport Yacht Club at low tide with 5’6” of water under our keel (we draw 5’) entering the Hudson against the current making less than 5 kts for the morning and into the early afternoon. The good news was that it was a beautiful day and we had the New York skyline to entertain us.
By mid afternoon, we finally got some help from the current and the scenery had changed from skyscrapers to the beautiful rockfaces, mountains, and trees of the Catskills. We passed majestic West Point and headed for our anchorage just up the river across from Bannerman Castle (the only castle built on the Hudson River and used to store ammunition and served as the first warehouse for the New York Army Navy Surplus Store).
It was a beautiful peaceful evening. Train tracks running along each shore of the river with frequent trains transiting them ensured we would hear the music of train whistles throughout the night.
