Tagging Green Sea Turtles
Sitting on the dock in a bay, watching the time roll away...
Well, that's basically what we were doing today. It was too windy to even sit poolside.
I had done a MAJOR sail repair the other day. The thread that Quantum used to make our sail had to have been the cheap stuff! It continued to disintegrate in the sun and salt of the islands. I had already resewn part of the leach on the headsail last year but had to restitch the rest that I hadn't while we were here as the entire edge had come detached. Good thing I have the Sailrite on board otherwise we would have incurred great expense and delay getting that sail fixed.
As we lolled in the cockpit reading and doing Sudoku's, a skiff came in and skulked about the basin. We all waved and on the way back past they pulled into the empty slip next to us asking if we were interested in seeing tagged green sea turtles.
Of course we were! I ran below to grab my camera and we jumped onto the dock. The couple had two sea turtles lying in the sole of the boat on their backs. They explained that they were doing the tagging as a voluntary act and taking local kids out with them when they could to promote environmental awareness. That day, they were taking the son of one of the managers of the marina out with them. I wanted to offer to be a kid for the day but I didn't ask and they didn't offer.
Green Sea Turtle Facts:
Adults can weigh between 200-500 lbs. As adults, they are primarily vegetarians but as juveniles, they are carnivorous. Green Sea Turtles rarely bite, even if provoked. Apparently, a sea turtle doesn't reach sexual maturity for 35 years! It is a wonder enough survive long enough to reproduce. They are highly endangered with fewer than 500,000 worldwide and the potential for their future survival in the wild is grim.
