Back to New Jersey

22 August 2014 | City Docks, Amsterdam, NY
Newport Yacht Club and Marina
At 2:00pm, we dropped our ball and as we were motoring away, I heard a squealing emanating from Mr. Yanmar. Fortunately, there were other empty moorings and we grabbed one to check out the problem. A quick belt adjustment by the Captain and we were back underway to our destination, Newport Yacht Club in New Jersey.
Unusual, the wind seemed favourable for a sail. The captain was excited and quickly deployed the jib sail. His euphoria was short lived as the wind shifted and almost died. After altering course to the extent that it was fruitless, sails luffing, he gave up, retired the sail and motorsailed yet again.
Once in the East River, we didn't experience the phenomenal speeds of our previous trip because we were at the beginning of the current shift. As we traversed the Battery, the river became sloppy and traffic picked up adding their wakes to the mix. After a short bob and weave, dodging ferry traffic and pleasure boaters in go-fast boats, we arrived at Newport Yacht Club and Marina.
They put us in the North basin that has a very narrow entrance and shallow depths. We pumped out and then proceeded to our slip tucked right up against the end of the fairway at the head of the dock and the exit ramp.
I began preparing our dinner while Ken headed out to check out the train to NYC just a block away. Just a hop and a skip on the PATH train and we would arrive at 33rd and 7th. We had a plan!
