I'm a Stranger Here Myself!

25 July 2011 | Back in Halifax
Bonnie
OK, I freely admit I stole that title from a Bill Bryson book. But really, after being away for almost two months, things at home seem just a bit...foreign.

Lots of things are better here. The weather, for starters. Oh, I can hear you snorting with derision at the very idea that the weather in Nova Scotia could be preferable to the weather in Greece, but bear in mind that the week before we flew home, the temperatures below deck on Aisling were topping 35 degrees by mid-afternoon. After a while we decided it was better not to know, and put the thermometer away. If we left a bottle of water on the galley counter, it would become so warm you'd think it had been heated in a kettle. By noon, even a Brahmin fire-walker would have had trouble making his way across our decks, and the metal ladder at the side of the boat was almost hot enough to cook a steak on. Every afternoon, we went to a little beach on the edge of the village to cool down with a swim, but by the time we'd get back to the boat we'd be just as hot as ever. I had recurring fantasies involving chilly winter days and snowy nights. When we got off the plane in Halifax and the temperature was a chilly 14 degrees at 2 a.m., I could have kissed the ground.

Weather aside, it's taking a while to adjust to the luxuries available at home. Things that must be strictly rationed when we're living on the boat (water, electricity, phone and internet) are available in unlimited quantities. Being able to turn on the tap and get fresh, drinkable water seems nothing short of miraculous. With a washing machine at our disposal, there is never a day when we have to choose our "cleanest dirty shirts". It took me a few days to remember that it was OK to dry my hair with a hairdryer. The price of gasoline and diesel seems amazingly low. In fact, about the only things that are more expensive here are vegetables, olive oil and wine...too bad for us, because these are a few of our favourite things. It was a bit of a shock to pay $15 at the Halifax farmer's market for a bag of vegetables that would have cost perhaps $6 at a market in in Greece and even less in Turkey.

There are other differences. Throwing toilet paper into the toilet now seems just wrong. On the streets and in the park, I am astonished by how healthy and well-fed the dogs and cats are. The other day, I saw a little wooden house on a post at the side of the road and automatically assumed it was a shrine (in fact, it was a mailbox). Most importantly, I am suddenly more aware of how beautiful Nova Scotia really is, and how lucky we are to live here.

My friend Liz (who, like us, cruises part-time) made an interesting observation when we were out walking in Porto Heli one day. "I'm not quite sure", she said, "whether I'm happier when I'm here or happier at home". I've often pondered the same question, and although I'm still not sure of the answer, it feels pretty darn good to be home right now. Great to get lots of hugs from our kids and our parents... great to eat strawberry shortcake at the church hall in New Waterford... great to have friends around the dining room table eating Greek salad and barbecued steak with the wine and conversation flowing freely. For the first few days, Rick seemed a bit bemused by the concept of not having to go to the office, but our days are very full. We are catching up on all the small tasks that mount while we are away, preparing for my mother's 80th birthday party and eagerly awaiting the arrival of the "Salsmans from away" and our traditional lobster feast.

The pace of life is faster here though. Hopefully our blogs postings about Mycenae and Mystras won't go the way of the ones about Delos and Antalya (i.e. never get written). Our weeks at home will fly by all too quickly and before we know it, we'll be back onboard Aisling. Provided that the installation of the new stuffing box has gone smoothly, we'll soon be making our way toward the Ionian sea and eventually onward to Sicily, where we will leave Aisling in her winter berth at Porto Marina di Ragusa. We'll have to go through the whole process of adjusting to life on the water again, of course. Please Lord, let the weather have cooled down before I have to climb that ladder again.

During the winter, we babysat Murphy Brown (a lovely poodle that belongs to our friends Wally and Martha) for 10 days. I had some fun capturing her in some of her favourite spots!
