ICW in reverse
hot, sunny
09 June 2012 | Coinjock, NC
Ok, it's been a slog up the ICW since we came in at Port Royal Sound near Beaufort, SC where I blogged last. We waited for Beryl to go through and had to contend with her coming back at us. We went north to an anchorage we used last time on Memorial Day. It was cold and rainy and the tide kept coming at us from the wrong direction making us slower still. We did pass the big house in the pictures which was built in 1792 and was a cotton plantation. It is named Prospect Hill and is on the National Register of Historic Places and can be found on the WWW. Supposedly it was designed by James Hoban who designed the White House, not documented but rumored. It is a beautiful location overlooking the waterway.
We stopped at a very quaint place, McClellanville, the only restaurant in town, TW Graham's was open the night we were there and we had some yummy fried oysters and a tasty shrimp burrito. I think the people in SC are the friendliest folk around. Always helpful and ready to shoot the breeze.
We then worked our way up to Georgetown, SC, we ate at the Kudzu Bakery and bought bread and just enjoyed walking the streets where the houses date from the late 1700's. Bought some fresh shrimp too.
Some nights we anchor and that's really the best as it is quiet and we don't feel compelled to do anything other than enjoy the scenery.
When we dock we must check out the town or whatever and get a meal...sometimes not really worth it. We also get water or fill the fuel tank or as today do laundry.
Today we have worked our way to the north of NC and tomorrow hope to make it to Norfolk where we can set out on the Chesapeake Bay. The string of bascule bridges and swing bridges from here in Coinjock to Norfolk plus the only lock really can put a cramp in the day's run.
Next Sunday(not tomorrow) is Father's Day so Happy Father's Day to all Dads, past and present. I will be calling mine, he's in a class by himself.
Please comment as I am encouraged by knowing this is read by some. I really enjoy sharing but would like some feedback, good or bad.

I am so glad you are blogging, and I am sure it is being read by most if not all the people on your list. I bet this time you will get many comments, since you urged them to write even just to say hi!

Ivy, I read every single Alchemy blog post. I enjoy your descriptions of the town and waterways. As Mike stated, I had to post this time since you encouraged your readers to respond.

Hey Iv and Mike, Yes I too enjoy reading about your adventures - even about the everyday routine. The Plantation house looks wonderful and I bet to can't get that view from the land. Cheasepeake Bay sailing ought to be fun. Hope you have great weather. This week in Nairobi has been cool and a bit rainy. But we are indoors all day so it hasn't effected our training. Today I went to the game park just outside Nairobi and as usual it was a great outing. We didn't see a lion this time or zebras (strange) but giraffes, water buffalo, haartebeest and other antelop. Just great to be out in the wilderness. Next week I will drive 4 hours to Tsavo West Game Park - hoping to see elephants - and view of Mt. Kilimanjaro. Then on to the DRC. Enjoy your journey north.

Of course everyones reading your blog, I never knew I needed glasses until I started reading your adventure. You couldn't just get a 38ft Winnabago like anyone else, could you? If you hurry back, you could possibly be part of the book that's being published about your travels. Love the pictures and the very enjoyable writing, keep it up.

We have read every blog and enjoyed all the pictures. I loved the Plantation house, but I sure wouldn't want to clean it. Enjoy a safe trip home and Happy Father's Day Mike. Love to you both!
