Alchemy
Chesapeake Bay
cloudy, windy, rainy
14 June 2012 | Reedville, VA
Here we are in the Chesapeake.
We motored from Coinjock, VA up through Norfolk/Hampton Roads on the day of OPSAIL where many, many tall ships paraded and were there for tours etc. It was tricky helming but Mike was great and I took pictures and wrote down all the ship names. They were fabulous.
We sailed to Deltaville, VA on Monday and stayed overnight, inserting ourselves into a pizza party in the lounge. Most of those folks have old boats like Alchemy, even a Tartan among them and were hard at work on them. We even saw a sister ship to Alchemy, that is a Tartan 41 who had just been put in the water.
Now we are in Reedville, VA, a quaint town that has deep creeks on all sides. A north blowing front is taking its time moving so we are waiting until at least the waves go down and wind is less than 15k.
There is a good museum here that documents the menhaden industry, an ingredient for fish oil and pet foods and other things. They also have a working skipjack, the working boat for oyster dredging and the oldest home in town dating to 1874 or so.
We're running out of staples like oil and garlic and bread so we're eating out and I'm trying to be creative with food.
Hoping to leave Saturday to move north to Solomons Island. Wish us luck with the weather gods.
Sending backslaps and attaboys to all the Dads who read this. It's a tough job but somebody has to do it.
