New Bern, the Bear town
08 May 2012 | New Bern, NC
Linda/ sunny!
We left Morehead City early while the current was slack to avoid smacking into anything. The trip was short and we arrived at the dock in New Bern with plenty of time to explore and find a place for dinner. That first night we enjoyed caramelized Salmon. Delicious!! Morgan’s Pub on Craven Street has delicious Salmon! Wednesday we took time to shop the many little places in downtown New Bern. Mitchel’s Hardware was amazing. It was packed with everything imaginable. We had an early dinner at Captain Ratty’s.
Thursday was tourist day. We had breakfast at Baker’s Kitchen where they served mouthwatering French toast and then took a trolley tour of historic New Bern. People were friendly and helpful. A distinctive feature of New Bern is that there are many fiberglass Bears displayed throughout the town. They are dressed in the garb of various professions, a trademark of the city. A tour of the Tryon Place ended up being a private tour for Jim and me. Our guide answered a lot of questions. The palace was originally built for the Governor of NC when New Bern was the Capitol. Then it burned and a road was built over the site. In 1951 the palace was rebuilt on the original foundation. It was furnished with beautiful period pieces. The Palace was definitely worth seeing.
Friday we provisioned and then enjoyed the live band on the deck at Christopher’s while we ate dinner.
