Middle of nowhere
6 days out from the Galapagos and we hit 1000nm. 1/3 of the way, haven't see a boat of any sort since leaving. The winds have been consistently 10-15 knots with our boat speed averaging around 7+ knots. We look likely to cover the 3000nm in 18 days assuming the same weather. When the weather map is downloaded we check to confirm out current course directly east at 3.5 degrees south of the equator has predicted good winds. On every download there are always larger winds and storms to the south for us to be wary. If they come more northerly than predicted we plan to sail with them towards the equator as they reduce in intensity. Sandy has the cooking sorted and I'm sure the boys home in Cairns are missing that. Such a long way still to go and one has to be mindful to keep your mind occupied. It took me two days to get back my sea legs on this trip as I did not quite feel right. As the boat speed has been up too high for any fishing I still have managed to catch a flying fish in my bed courtesy of an open window. Cheers for now, mark.
03 - 06 AVRIL SUITE ET FIN
Enfin arrivés au Panama. Mais il reste à passer le canal.
Depuis le début de l'aventure, et même dès les préparations, Panama allait être un point charnière du voyage impliquant nécessairement une révision des décisions pour de multiples raisons. La traversée des Antilles à Panama serait un test certain pour le bateau et l'équipage. Alexandra aurait-elle répondu aux exigences de navigation au long cours? Les membres de l'équipage seraient-t-ils capables de continuer le voyage (entente, moral, consécration, possibilité face à d'autres engagements, etc.)?
Évidemment, le destin a mis son nez dans l'affaire!
- Brodie reçu des mauvaises nouvelles concernant la santé critique de sa belle-mère et a du donc nous quitter le 4 avril non sans émotion de tous et surtout de Max puisqu'ils sont des amis très proches de longue date avec de nombreuses heures de voile partagées au fil des années.
- De son côté, Mark qui, avant le voyage, pensait ne pas pouvoir être loin de son entreprise trop longtemps, jusqu'au Panama ou aux Galápagos tout au plus, a pu réaliser que tout allait bien en son absence grâce à son directeur des opérations. Ainsi, être de l'entièreté du voyage est devenu une possibilité. De plus, Anne, son épouse, a aussi la possibilité et le désir d'être du voyage à partir de Panama, ainsi que Sandy, la fille de Max.
- Le délai du passage du Canal de Panama pour les « petits » bateaux (ce qu'Alexandra est comparée aux immenses cargos, il faut l'avouer!) est de 2+ semaines. Ce qui retarde d'autant l'arrivée à Tahiti (fin juin - début juillet).
J'ai donc décidé de terminer ici ce voyage pour plusieurs raisons :
- Je serais vraiment trop longtemps loin d'Isabelle et deux petits et d'Hanneke qui serait seule dans notre maison à St Sauveur puisqu'elle doit être au Québec fin avril au plus tard pour des raisons de visas canadiens.
- J'ai acquis toute l'expérience et le plaisir, (et plus) que je me prométtais pour toute la traversée jusqu'à Tahiti. Comme je l'ai exprimé au Capitaine (Max), « si j'espérais un litre d'expérience et de satisfaction pour le voyage Antilles - Tahiti, j'en ai déjà acquis trois litres rendu à Panama ».
- Enfin, le voyage devient une « affaire de famille » pour les Nicholson. N'est-ce pas une belle expérience pour un père (Max) de faire ce voyage avec ses deux enfants et leurs conjoints? Je crois que malgré mon amitié pour Max et mon plaisir et respect de côtoyer Mark et Sandy, je me serais senti « de trop » en quelque sorte.
Par contre, puisque Manuel et Heydee sont au Panama avec la famille d'Heydee, je suis donc allé passer une semaine très agréable avec eux et leur merveilleuse famille.
Retour au Québec : vendredi 13 avril, Panama City -Newark - Montréal.
Évidemment, cette expérience m'a redonné le goût et la détermination de plus de voile.
