A Day With the Dolphins
14 March 2014 | Sombrero Reef
I have been a little remiss about posting but since we arrived in Marathon we have been running around like a couple of chickens with their heads cut off. We visited the new Dockside Café that is now owned by Eric Stone and his wife. Eric Stone gained his fame as the house band for Bob Bitchin's magazine, Latitudes and Attitudes. After the magazine folded, Eric had the opportunity to buy Dockside and he has done a nice job of bringing it back to its former grandeur. Notably, Mickey Bellin whom we met two years ago, is still playing his trumpet on Sunday night jams. Mickey has played with virtually every big band and is still going at age 96!!! I took a picture of him with my cell camera. Not great but check it out in the gallery.
Wendell and Linda arrived on Weds, March 5th. We were so glad to see them because having them on board is so easy. They enjoy the adventure and are good sailors so they are great help with boat management. One of our first adventures after their arrival was a trip out to the Sombrero Reef. The reef is part of a national maritime sanctuary. There are mooring balls all around it so you can take the boat out and tie up without damaging the reef with your anchor. The reef is four miles out in the Atlantic and we had a very leisurely sail out there. We were treated to an unexpected visit by a pod of dolphins that swam alongside our boat for about an hour. I had never seen dolphins this close for so long. It was very special. Linda shot a video and Peg/Marg got some great stills. Check them out in the gallery.
On the 10th, we are going to sail down to Key West for a couple of days. Stay tuned for more fun in the sun.
