We are desperate to sail, but got what we asked for, mild weather, small seas, biiiiigggg looooong swells and a lot of what we didn't ask for...sweltering heat!
When we travel overnight or for more than a 24 hour day...we wind up getting in the sleeping groove just about the time we arrive at our destination. We are tired. It's day 3 of the big ocean passage and my honey needs to be at the top of his captainship...he needs sleep.
I'm the comfort queen! I strapped him with the boomvang bridle and tied him to the winch, brought his pillows from the v-berth, tied the 12v fan above his head and he finally started to snore.
06/10/2011, North of Puerto Rico
We really have fond memories of Puerto Rico and that's just what it's gonna be for now, a superb memory. We can still see that lush, colorful, Spanish speaking, vibrant country, off our port bow, but it's getting fuzzy. It will have to be from an airplane the next time!
This is day 2 of the 4 day passage we have begun with South Caicos as a way-point until we see how we lie toward the wind, how tired we are and whether or not anything unexpected arises! We also realize that the weather sites are bang on accurate...NO WIND! The other big points worth mentioning, I think anyway, is that we have settled into the cadence of the sea, as rolly as she is, nothing has gone bang in the night, not a whale, not a container, nor any such frightening obstacle that right now is only in our (my) mind. The roar of the ocean undulating under our hull is like the earth breathing.
This is what I exclaimed @ 5:30a other than "it's your watch" ."Honey, you've got to see this"!!!!
Absolutely breathtaking and panorama shots do not one spec of justice to this sunrise!
Every weather site we use...all of them: Chris Parker, Wunderground, Passage Weather and Windfinder agree...it's time to go! It's going to be calm...very still actually! The seas are down and we are leaving in the am.
We came back out here to Dakity, just inside the reef to clean the water line....OMG...what a garden! The bay near town was very nutritious!!! We also need a bottom job! I took care of that and my amazing captain dove the prop and the rudder! We're ready!
This is a biggie for us! We have historically taken baby steps for three years now and we are about to change that!
We will shoot for the Turks and Caicos! It should be a very fun passage with the little wind we have finally behind us or off our quarter instead of on the nose!
06/03/2011, Still sitting in Culebra!!!!
We are not making any northerly action with this! GREAT! Just what we don't need! Guess we'll sit and wait now! OK, we don't know how to sit!

05/30/2011, Culebra to Fajardo, Puerto Rico
We have no choice...it's Memorial Day Monday and these little ferreterias are not open!
We got the ferry @ 6:30a...and decided to follow a family we heard talking on the ferry about breakfast as the number one item on the list today. Cafe Delicias was the place and then we tried to find a taxi! I got two numbers from the ticket office employee who was especially helpful...but we had no phone (we forgot it...ooops)! We found a phone booth...another ruh roh! Not working!
We circled, we walked to a busier place...back to the station where taxi's should be...no luck! Finally, we found Luis...or he found us!
He was extremely helpful...knowing gas filling stations, higher end propane parts places...nobody had a 12v solenoid! Hmmmmm....
There is the West Marine and it's our only hope today! It's open...they have it...but not here...IN THE STATES! We can get it in two days...but today doesn't count...Memorial Day! Yeiiiiiiiiikes! Probably Wednesday or Thursday! This is just crazy! We got back to the waterfront at about 10:30...sat at Cafe Delicias for another hour...decided to go for a walk when their lunch crowd started to arrive and come back when we got hungry, again! We'll be sightseeing for a few hours...we have 'til 3p.
More later when we know! Thank goodness we have internet and can get weather and we have a Ferry for $4.50pp round trip to go get that important little bugger on Thursday, WE HOPE!

05/29/2011, Culebra...Day 4...still...
Can't believe this! We finally have our brain wrapped around the idea we're making a 400 mile leap...not in the Mona Passage, thank you very much. We really have the perfect weather to sail...no big seas...nothing coming til Wednesday late and Thursday!
We can provision! We can fill up with water...but the solenoid crapped out on us! Just can't believe this! We should be leaving tomorrow!
Now we are taking our chances that someone here in Culebra, NOT...Puerto Rico...will have one! The only other obstacle on this new adventure is Memorial Day Monday!
For sure we are food addicts...we both said it at the same time "Can't cook...got go into town for dinner"...
We had great food on day one at "The Dingy Dock" just because of timing and a tummy growl! Today we choose Mamacitas because of the atmosphere. It was about the 'garden setting on the canal'...which turned into party central with the kids! Everybody was respectful, having fun and we were right in the middle of it all!
The ferry leaves at 6:30...wish us luck!
