The weather kicked up, wind started howling, we woke up with a bang when the thunder clapped so loudly you'd think a giant microphone was hard wired from the lighting to our boat however many seconds away it was. Yeiks...rude awakening.

The wind swung around and had us now on a lee shore extremely uncomfortable with the stern so close to the rocks and had to off load the dingy in the dark. In the middle of the night, with the wind and rain howling, of course, can't see and have to off load the dink, drop the engine, untether and dread the chore of aiming it in the dark to the dingy. Still have to lower the fuel tank and the CQR #2 in the dink. This is a two person event in the dink in this blow, to a point 120 degrees away from primary, number one anchor where he can lower and drop the second line! We sure have had enough practice on this journey but it doesn't mean we like it any better.

We were tired...but it's the last and only day we will allow ourselves to take advantage of the exploring calling our names. We hiked, we participated in the crab races, we saw sharks, rays, tenacity of nature at it's best and photo ops galore...I just can't help myself.

This ray was a loner, but his relatives en mass were loving the shallows nearby and I wouldn't jump out of the boat until my hero nudged us up to the beach...coward. Now we understand why the parade of boats kept tucking up to shore in droves. They were feeding the rays squid they were buying in Bimini and this was the entertainment. Who knew?

Vessel Name: Altair
Vessel Make/Model: Tartan 34'
Hailing Port: Coconut Grove Sailing Club
Crew: Dudley Clark and Becky Butler
About: Dudley has owned this Tartan sloop and has been cruising on her since 1986. Becky joined the good sloop back in 2000 when we first started cruising together and he has been 'training' me ever since! I couldn't be happier! I've been sailing all my life, but cruising is a whole different fish!
Extra: This is the most extended cruise we've braved on this wonderful, old boat of ours which is planned to be about 2 years! We left Miami in late February of 2008 and want to get below the hurricane belt by the end of July! Ok, so it's July, 2011...we're close, but not home yet!
