Owen and Eli

Altair is snuggled into Bert Jabins Boat Yard near Annapolis until June 14. We had a quick visit with grandsons Owen and Eli (their parents too) last night in Towson MD. Owen is finishing third grade as well as his lacrosse season. He will come up to Maine again for a week in July by himself and take [...]

999 Miles!

We've put 999 miles on the boat since leaving Puerto Rico on April 14. What a wonderful way to return from the Caribbean. In years past, we've had to hustle on the way home...it's been nice to take our time.

It is wonderful to be back on the boat. We arrived in Tortola last night.... three hours late...after leaving BWI in a snowstorm. Guess that was fitting since we arrived home a week or so before in a snowstorm as well. Spring doesn't seem to be part of the plan for the Northeast this year. Our Ocean Sailing Seminar in Baltimore was fun... 46 eager offshore sailors-to-be in the audience. After 8 years doing these seminars, we are ready to pass the baton to Mia and Andy who are more than capable of taking over. Our two days with Ted, Rebecca, Owen, and Eli were, as always very special.

But nothing beats being back on the boat where it is warm and sunny. We had a beautiful sail from Nanny Cay to Virgin Gorda this afternoon after a morning of provisioning and boat prep. The Watt & Sea churned along topping off the batteries....she gives a funny little hum to tell you that the batteries are fully charged. At anchor, we quickly leaped into the water for an afternoon swim. Mary and my Samoset water fitness friends would have been proud of me... I went through a complete regimen of our deep water exercises. Don't even need any floatation as the heavy salt content makes me very bouyant in the warm water.

Rum and ginger beer (how could we have gone a whole week without our on-board specialty!) preceeded our dinner of salmon and zukes. Elaine Dresser had recommended a recipe of pesto on the salmon when she and Dutch were on board. It's a keeper... mighty tasty... and very easy.

Tomorrow afternoon, we will head on over to St. Martin. If we leave in the late afternoon, we should be in by morning. Should be a calm night with a full moon. Can't beat that!

While we were home, I put up two picture galleries on our blog... one that shows the pieces and parts of the Watt & Sea and the other that features photos taken by Yacht Shots of us in Sir Francis Drake Channel flying the chute. Take a peek when you have a chance.

Long Island is an island of 4000 people, 80 miles long and four miles wide. Known for its bone fishing. People are very friendly.

The lions are painted by prominent Puerto Rican artists. They are really cool standing guard in the parks of Ponce.

Cabo Rojo is the cape at the southwestern corner of Puerto Rico. The beach is miles long, but the beach towns are noisily honky-tonk. The lighthouse and its cliffs and iguanas are most impressive

The northwestern corner of Puerto Rico is blanketed with caves, jungle, dramatic limestone outcroppings, and Taino Indian ruins. Fascinating!

Tom and Sue had been on St Martin for a week before we arrived and were excellent tour guides for us. The island is far more than just The Lagoon!

Tom & Sue Maynes were on board with us in Anguilla. Our first visit to the island and we loved it. Festival, boat racing, and generally enjoying the beaches.
