Owen and Eli

Altair is snuggled into Bert Jabins Boat Yard near Annapolis until June 14. We had a quick visit with grandsons Owen and Eli (their parents too) last night in Towson MD. Owen is finishing third grade as well as his lacrosse season. He will come up to Maine again for a week in July by himself and take [...]

999 Miles!

We've put 999 miles on the boat since leaving Puerto Rico on April 14. What a wonderful way to return from the Caribbean. In years past, we've had to hustle on the way home...it's been nice to take our time.

Before we came over to Big Majors today, we visited the local "laundermat" on Black Point. Like many little businesses on these islands, the proprietor (or proprietress, in this case) will do any number of things to make money. While my laundry was churning around in the machines, she offered to cut my hair. It really needed it. So I sat on a plastic chair behind her shop looking out at the turquoise blue water of the bay. No sink (she just spritzed my hair with a spray bottle to get it wet)... No mirror...no need to sweep up as the wind blew away the cuttings from my hair.No need to blow dry either. For $15, she did an acceptable job...enuf to get me through until we get home. Rick got his hair cut too. Several regular customers dropped by while we were in the chair. The big discussion was about Red Stripe, the Bahamian sloop that won the Georgetown regatta last weeked. Red Stripe is a Black Point boat so there was much celebration on Saturday night here....not a drop of booze left on the island apparently. In this particular shop, you can also buy an assortment of cleaning supplies, fresh baked goods, and island handicrafts (they specialize in woven hats, purses,etc.). And oh yes, you can take a shower with cold or hot water for $5. She also encouraged us to donate to her church's fund-raising project... which we were happy to do. All a part of friendly Bahamian life.

On Big Majors, only 9 miles away, we hunkered down to wait out the predicted snotty weather for the next several days. Sounds like we will get hit by a line of thunderstorms and squalls coming off the east coast. Shouldn't bring a ton of wind, but the anchorage is protected so we will be ready for whatever comes our way. For all who know Big Majors, you will be happy to know that the swimming pigs are alive and well. Didn't see any cruisers feeding them today, though. The Thunderball Grotto is still open for its great snorkeling, but the hole at the top of the cave is blocked so no one can jump down from above any more.

Glorious sunset tonight...hard to believe that lousy weather is on its way.

Long Island is an island of 4000 people, 80 miles long and four miles wide. Known for its bone fishing. People are very friendly.

The lions are painted by prominent Puerto Rican artists. They are really cool standing guard in the parks of Ponce.

Cabo Rojo is the cape at the southwestern corner of Puerto Rico. The beach is miles long, but the beach towns are noisily honky-tonk. The lighthouse and its cliffs and iguanas are most impressive

The northwestern corner of Puerto Rico is blanketed with caves, jungle, dramatic limestone outcroppings, and Taino Indian ruins. Fascinating!

Tom and Sue had been on St Martin for a week before we arrived and were excellent tour guides for us. The island is far more than just The Lagoon!

Tom & Sue Maynes were on board with us in Anguilla. Our first visit to the island and we loved it. Festival, boat racing, and generally enjoying the beaches.
