Owen and Eli

Altair is snuggled into Bert Jabins Boat Yard near Annapolis until June 14. We had a quick visit with grandsons Owen and Eli (their parents too) last night in Towson MD. Owen is finishing third grade as well as his lacrosse season. He will come up to Maine again for a week in July by himself and take [...]

999 Miles!

We've put 999 miles on the boat since leaving Puerto Rico on April 14. What a wonderful way to return from the Caribbean. In years past, we've had to hustle on the way home...it's been nice to take our time.

Crossroads

26 May 2013 | Solomon's Island
Julie
We pulled into Solomon's Island on Thursday and, as usual, found it to be Crossroads of Chesapeake Bay sailors coming and going. For us, it has been 969 miles since Puerto Rico.

Our friend Tim on Kinship was to meet us here, his Homeport, but got stuck in Charleston with a broken shroud. Instead, we ran into Bill and Carol Loring on Rigel, a Saga 409, and Bill and Rosemary Thomas on Crazy Horse, a Sundeer 62.... Caribbean 1500 friends. Tom and Julie Sitzmann with their kids Thomas and Annie on Airwaves, a J 120, came in during the afternoon....we had seen Julie's parents, Saga 48 owners, in Hampton.

We were stuck on the boat in cold, wet, dreary, 40 knot weather on Friday and while the temps were still cold, the sunshine on Sunday welcomed us ashore for a couple of nice walks. Wandering around the boatyard, we noticed another Saga 409...as yet unnamed. New owners Richard and Ruth from Bethesda bought the boat in a boat auction in Chicago and had it shipped here. It had been on the hard under shrink wrap for three years, so they are busily checking out all systems, replacing canvas, and making necessary repairs. We had them over for cocktails, listening to their sailing plans and enthusiasm about their new boat...To be known as Baby B.

It's still cold....two three-blanket nights in a row....but think we will get on our way this morning in promised 15 knot winds. We'll see.

Long Island is an island of 4000 people, 80 miles long and four miles wide. Known for its bone fishing. People are very friendly.

The lions are painted by prominent Puerto Rican artists. They are really cool standing guard in the parks of Ponce.

Cabo Rojo is the cape at the southwestern corner of Puerto Rico. The beach is miles long, but the beach towns are noisily honky-tonk. The lighthouse and its cliffs and iguanas are most impressive

The northwestern corner of Puerto Rico is blanketed with caves, jungle, dramatic limestone outcroppings, and Taino Indian ruins. Fascinating!

Tom and Sue had been on St Martin for a week before we arrived and were excellent tour guides for us. The island is far more than just The Lagoon!

Tom & Sue Maynes were on board with us in Anguilla. Our first visit to the island and we loved it. Festival, boat racing, and generally enjoying the beaches.
