After a wonderful night with plenty of trade wind breezes, everyone awakened refreshed and ready to go. After breakfast of fresh pineapple and muffins, Dave, Lisa & I went snorkeling to the reef just in from of the boat. Since the water was only 12' deep between the boat and the reef and the reef was even shallower, we didn't bother with the hookah. The current wasn't bad and the reef was quite interesting. No big fish, but a couple of BIG rays. Just as we got to the reef, a big eagle ray – at least 4' across – swam right past me. He wasn't 5' away as he passed! Not threatening at all (nor threatened by me), he was just curious and kept on going. Later on another section of reef, we saw an even bigger sting ray. He buried himself in the sand to hide (rather ineffectively) from us. I found one conch, but it was inhabited by a hermit crab, not a conch so I threw it back. After lunch, Deb, Dave & I decided to use the hookah to go conch hunting. We attached a third line, launched the hookah and fired it up. Started right away and then died. And again. Pulled it up and dropped the carb bowl and cleaned the jets AGAIN. Started right up and died. This time we pulled the entire carburetor, took it apart, really found nothing particular but cleaned and reassembled it and started it up. Ran great and then died. Pulled spark plug, it was carboned up a bit (looked more like too rich than too lean which a dirty jet should cause?), replace it and at the same time tightened the throttle control arm, ran fine. Was it the sparkplug? I doubt it. The control arm? Maybe, but not likely. Anyway it worked and Deb, Dave & I went on an hour long hookah with no problems except for the fact that we only found one conch! It was a nice dive anyway and glad to have the hookah working again. Boat drinks, steaks on the grill with baked potatoes, a tot of run while lying in the tramp looking at a beautiful spread of starts (moon is waning now so not up yet!), and early bed.

Always & All Ways's Photos - Main
In the Spring of 2016, we sailed from Bocas del Toro, Panama, to Cuba and back with stops at the Albuquerque Cays, Providencia, and the Cayman Islands. We cruised the South coast of Cuba some and then left the boat for some inland excursions.
