The beauty of the islands

14 March 2017 | San Blas Islands

By 9:30, Frederico showed up wit water - he had 6 55 gal. barrels in a wooden cayuga. We used a bucket and a funnel to transfer it to our tank. We took on a bit over 100 gallons which filled the tanks. Cost, $12.00. And then we were off. We motored the short 45 min. to Iguana Islands. We looked at the anchorage Bauhaus recommended on the Eastern most island, but preferred the one we had used previously on the Middle one. Not long after we were anchored and had had lunch, another large cat came and started to anchor way too close. Fortunately, he thought better of it and ended up anchoring essentially in the cut between the middle and Western most island - still invading 'our' island, but not uncomfortably close. We dinghied to the island and walked around beach combing the beautiful white sandy beaches. Then we snorkeled the reef that came all the way to shore. It was beautiful and vibrant. It appeared fairly young with mostly small form coral, but very healthy. Then we rounded a corner and it was all covered with fungus and dead looking - very strange such a sharp change. We took dink to the Eastern island. It too had beautiful sandy beaches all around. There were pilings in the water where a dock had once been, but the only sign of the Kuna hotel that had once stood there was a deteriorating water tower. The rebar was rusting and as it expanded, it popped the covering concrete off. At one point as I looked up at it, a wispy cloud drifted over making it look like the water tower was swaying and about to fall. I gave it a wide berth. No good coral to snorkel here, but a delightful pool that was just right for soaking in. Shortly after we got back to our boat, the other cat left! Alone again. Nice. We had a great evening in the tramp watching stars until the moon rose and washed most of them out. Today we sail to Chichime to 'stage' for our departure Wed (assuming the winds cooperate).

In the Spring of 2016, we sailed from Bocas del Toro, Panama, to Cuba and back with stops at the Albuquerque Cays, Providencia, and the Cayman Islands. We cruised the South coast of Cuba some and then left the boat for some inland excursions.
