Cruising.

Saturday, March 31. This morning Craig & I went ashore and made last minute purchases and then settled our bill with Nene's marina. (Internet, $4.00 US/day, use of dinghy dock $2.00/day but free if you get internet.) By noon we were back on board and after a quick lunch, weighed anchor and motored out the fairway as far as Red 6A where we hung a hard left and came up to Rose Island where we anchored in crystal clear water over white sand. This will be an easy departure point at midnight. Somehow, just leaving the anchorage and the marina shifted gears and we are in cruising mode again. I had a swim, a beer and a hammock. Then we took dink and all four of us went ashore to explore tiny Rose Island. Now Rose Island is a small lump of white sand with just enough room for 3 beach bars on it. A sandbar extends to the W for maybe ¼ nm and to the E you can walk on marl about knee deep over to Cordoba Island which is much larger and wooded. It, too, has a beach bar and blaring music this afternoon with many dancing partiers. We choose to stay at Rose, relax in the shallow water over white sand, enjoy a cervesa, and just cool. One guy had a Southern Ray that he was letting people pet. It kept trying to swim ahead, but he held it either side of the head and had his body in front of it. Apparently it either couldn't or wasn't smart enough to think of swimming backwards. It was a nice looking ray ~3' across. It must be used to this treatment because at one point he even picked up the tail to show someone the stinger. There were boats everywhere, pangas, sport fishers, run abouts, jet skis, everything. But still the atmosphere was island laid back and OK. When we went back to the boats, we noticed a large container ship in the WRONG place near the entrance to the channel. And it wasn't moving! For more than an our it wasn't moving. And it did not have an anchor down. By the chart, it was in an area of ~24' that had numerous patches of 7'. Oops! As we were eating dinner, he started to move, went about two boat lengths, and stopped again. If he is still there when we get up at midnight, we will know he is in BIG trouble. Funny, he is located just of the bow of a wreck that is in one of the pics I took (see photo album). Maybe there will be another. Even though we are leaving at midnight, we have carefully plotted a course to stay in DEEP water all the way. Now it is time for an early bed.
