Day 28, Hookah Paradise.

12 April 2012 | Providencia, Columbia, SA
Mark
Thursday, April 12. I spoke with Craig early this AM and he was scheduled for a full battery of tests that would take the whole day. They would not be coming back until Friday and the earliest. It sounded like his doctor there was on the ball and appropriate things were being done. The morning got hot quickly and so I went into the water and scraped the second hull. After that, we went into town and got provisions that were non-perishable. I spoke with George and it looks like there is some more weather on the way and we should either leave by Saturday or wait for next Monday. Probably not a great idea to be the tallest (or only) mast in the anchorage when squalls come through. George & I went to the gas station and filled Craig's jerry jugs of diesel as well as my mixed gas jug. (Dinghy over to that side of town, walk a block or so to the gas station, fill your jugs and carry them back to the dinghy.) After lunch, Deb & I went hookahing again. Deb wanted to go back to Morgan's Head – good choice! It was fantastic. So three dimensional that it was amazing. The basic depth was 20-30' but the coral was piled up to near the surface in many places. In others, strips of sand penetrated the walls of coral. We went up & down, in & out, all over the coral. And lots of fish! We saw another huge midnight parrot fish – I guess they are not rare here. We was several gray angels, always in pairs. They are so inquisitive, they are my favorite. At first they dart away on our approach, but if I just hover or lie on the bottom, they always come back to investigate. Usually they will approach within a few feet, sometimes even inches, if I am patient enough. And I swear they have binocular vision! (No other fish that I know of do.) We swam all the way out past the point that is in the picture and finally turned back. When we got back to dinghy, Deb still wanted more so we swam over to Morgan's Head and swam around the base of that being careful to keep the hookah from floating into the breakers. Again there were huge piles of coral from 30' to the surface. Crevices and tunnels everywhere. Here we saw several lobster, not real big and protected because this is a park, but fun to tease by touching their antennae. Deb has identified several variates of parrot fish and other fish that we have never seen before. Finally we returned to dink and came home. After getting everything properly put away, I snoozed in the hammock (after a Guinness) while listening to The Rolling Stones. We had veggies and dip with sundowners and then “Black & Blue” burgers for dinner. No word from Craig yet. I guess I'll wait to morning to call them. They have my number if they want to call.
