My Favorite Things

21 June 2015 | The Lemmons
Mark
We decided to move today to the Lemmons where there will hopefully be less current. The Lemmons are on the 'second tier' of reefs in from the open ocean and so even the 'outer' reefs should only experience minor waves. The course to the Lemmons is SW. The wind is ~10 kts from NE. Can you say "Spinnaker Run!"? Yes indeed. Shortly after we weighed anchor, we popped the spinnaker and ran on average 120* off the wind @ 5-6 kts in 8-10 kts apparent wind. Not bad. And very comfortable. Continuous for 2+ hrs. Approaching the Lemmons, we dropped the spinnaker and motored in. I called on VHF to be sure the entrance hadn't shoaled in as it was only 8' before. I was told it still carried 8' all the way. In fact, we saw 7.9 coming in over the bar and then 5.6 getting across the second sandbar into the anchorage. That is a bit close! (We draw 4.3') Going out, we will have to try a slightly different route over the bar. Once comfortably anchored and lunched, Bryan, Jana & I went for a snorkel. Deb wasn't feeling up to it. This is our third trip tot he Lemmons and my first chance to snorkel the reef. The first time, the wind was howling making any snorkeling impossible and the last time, Deb was sick. Wonder what it is about the Lemmons and Deb? Anyway, the three of us took dink out to the break in the Southern reef and anchored in ~3' of water. We swam out through the cut. It dropped to maybe 50'. And it was gorgeous. What a hookah dive this will make. Even snorkeling it was super. Very pretty coral and lots of fish. Lots of big fish. Two ocean trigger fish ~2' long. Big parrot fish. Other pelagics as well. Even inside was pretty with nice 'nests' of coral and lots of reef fish. I shot some video with my new camera mask, but we'll have to see how it came out. The stills have been rather disappointing. Tonight we will do Black & Blue Chicken (chicken with blackening spices and blue cheese in the middle) on the grill. Tomorrow we will hopefully be able to hookah the cut and then move to Porvinir to be there for Jana's 7:30 AM departure Tuesday. If there is time, we can stop at Dog Island and snorkel the wreck there. What a great day - spinnaker run and great snorkeling!
