The morning dawned with about 5 kts of wind from the W. We were headed E. Five kts of true W wind and 5 kts of boat speed E equals apparent wind of 0. Not good for sailing. So we motored. We were underway by ~9:00 with 32 nm to travel. Boat speed with both engines ~2400 rpm was 6.7kts and very comfortable. Seas were essentially flat,, though they could have been interesting had they been higher because we had a complex wave pattern with the normal NE swell and a wind derived NW swell. But at less than 3', none of that mattered. Since we were motoring at a good speed to troll for tuna and since The Pinncles (an area we would travel over) are supposed to be good for tuna, I put my cedar plug (Larry swears by them for tuna) on the new rod and reel I got from Dave and was READY. The tuna weren't. We saw birds working the water a couple times and little fish roiling the surface, but not even a strike. At least my fishing luck hasn't changed. About 2 hrs out of Escuda, the wind built a little, enough that putting sails up made sense, but not enough that turning engines off made sense. And then, still an hour out, we finally got enough wind to turn off the engines and SAIL. It was so quiet. As we came in to anchor, we noticed several boats of fishermen working the drop off (30'-90'). After we were anchored, one group of four young guys in a cayuga came buy to sell us crab. In the past, we have bought whole crabs, but they had cleaned them and were only selling the big claw with attached leg. I guess they eat the rest. Initially they said $3.00 each. We settled on $6.00 for 6. They were so huge that 3 of them were all we could eat for dinner. Guess I'll have to make crab salad for lunch. About 5:00 another boat approached. We had seen him on the shore of one of the little beaches that dot this coast and he appeared to be cutting some branches or something, but we couldn't figure it out. He told us it was for the turtles. Not sure exactly how that worked, but maybe we can go see today. Anyway, he was the local Conservation officer and came to collect our "donation" - again $5.00 each for jubilados. If it helps protect the turtles and he IS actually working for it, I don't mind. The next couple days we will spend beach combing, snorkeling and just lazing about and enjoying this special place.
