Pleasures of the Harbor

Providencia is a neat place. Yesterday morning I went and met Mr. Bush @ 10:00. He had the Port Captain and Migracion there as well and the whole process went very smoothly. $250 USD for the boat and four of us. I stopped at the ATM and got some Columbian Pesos ($CP300,000 ~$US100). After returning to the boat, I took Will & Sandy with me in the dinghy and we took out laundry to Miss Barbara. She still does laundry for $CP1,000 per item (underwear half price) It will be ready this evening. From Miss Barbara's, Sandy & Will followed the sidewalk down the the bridge and crossed over into town while I went back to the boat to get Deb. We did a little shopping, but mostly just looked. For lunch we took the dinghy back to the restaurant/bar that Orville & Arelis used to run. It is now called Starfish Gourmet and is run by a very pleasant couple and has a good menu. As wee were eating, Deb spotted Kenya walking by with a baby in a stroller. We quickly became reacquainted (we had met Kenya on our last trip here and become good friends.) Her baby is the same age as our grandson Weston and is 'definitely the last' We inquired about Arelis and learned that she was home (a house up behind the restaurant). After lunch Deb & I started to walk up to the house, but met one of Miss Barbara's sons who said that Arelis had to take her son the the hospital. (Her son is severely handicapped and has a couple shunts in his head. They had just recently returned from Bogata where he had surgery in his eyes.) We went to the hospital and met Orville outside. He said Isaac Daniel had a seizure and was going to be kept for observation. Because I am a doctor, they let us in and both the doctor who is staying at their house and the ER doc were very cordial in explaining to me what had happened and what they had done. They had already been in touch with his neurologist in Bogata and had started dilantin. It seems he is in good hands.
Leaving the hospital, we went to the phone company and met Sandy & Will there. Sandy has an international phone with data in 180+ countries but it didn't seem ti be working here (though it did in San Andres). They checked everything and ended up with the answer that Providencia was not one of the places it worked. I bought a local SIM card and some data time to put in my modem. Back at the boat we couldn't get the modem to work, but eventually with my SIM card in Sandy's phone we created a hot spot so everyone has internet - at least until we use up all the data (no idea how much we got). Today we are going to rent a Mule (car not animal) and tour the island. Should be fun.
