Cuba bound

28 May 2016 | Approaching Cuba
Mark
"George Town Port Security, George Town Port Security, s/v Always departing George Town for Cuba." With that report at 7:10 AM we began the last leg of our voyage to Cuba. It was a beautiful day - bright skies, light but consistent wind, flat sea, puffy clouds. And we are headed for Cuba. It doesn't get better than this! Except as has been true for all of this trip, the wind is more N than normal. Making Cienfuegos will be close hauled the whole way. Which is not really a problem. The boat sails well on that course, but with the light winds our landfall before darkness is questionable. And then I had a fantastic idea: Go to Cayo Largo instead of Cienfuegos! It is ~50nm closer and further W. We can sail there easily, even in light winds. The original plan called for arriving Cienfuegos and departing Cayo Largo, but we can just reverse that. Unlike Cienfuegos, Cayo Largo is tourist spot so hopefully they will be tolerant of our 'change of plans'. (Our zarpe says to Cienfuegos.) We'll find out. Once we fell off to our new course (353 instead of 024) and loosened sails to match, the boat sailed along smoothly on a broad reach - our fastest and most comfortable point of sail. As I write this, we are ~2 hrs from landfall. I have hailed the Guradia de Frntera" as required, but they have not answered (as expected). They usually only have hand helds and might hear me but I will not hear them until much closer. I have raised our Q and Cuban flags and will keep hailing the Guardia. This is exciting.

Always & All Ways's Photos - Main
In the Spring of 2016, we sailed from Bocas del Toro, Panama, to Cuba and back with stops at the Albuquerque Cays, Providencia, and the Cayman Islands. We cruised the South coast of Cuba some and then left the boat for some inland excursions.
