Obispo Street

After our late arrival, we 'slept in' a bit and had breakfast ~9:00. Fresh juice, Cuban coffee - very strong and sweet, but in tiny cups. At least the cups they use for breakfast are larger than the 'shot glasses' they serve it in the rest of the day. I had 4 of the still rather small cups. A plate of fruit, some Cuban bread, and eggs however you want them. At breakfast we met an English couple who suggested Obispo street was a good place to start and very near by. It was on our list anyway so that is where we went. It is a pedestrian street loaded with tiny shops, most selling tourist junk, but some with paintings and other more artisan stuff. When we got to the park, it was amazing. All around the park was a ring of stalls selling old books, original LPs, old money and other old objects as well as a variety of posters - some actually hand silk screened. Across the street, a group of 5 musicians were playing traditional music. As we were approaching the waterfront, a driver offered us a tour of the city by horse carriage for $10.00cuc per person. Sandy & Will were not interested, but Deb & I felt it was a good way to get the lay of the city and a fun ride as well. After confirming that this would cost $20.00cuc and NOT go up if he took longer than the promised 1 1/2 hrs, we were off. The carriage ride was fun and we got to see a lot of the city. One stop was a HUGE artisans building - more than a city block long and maybe half as wide, jammed with every type of artisan you can imagine. It was totally overwhelming. We passed the Havana Club rum museum that we will see later, the cigar factory where you can (maybe) buy cigars at a discount, and saw several amazing buildings. The opera house was just unbelievable. Totally restored and gorgeous baroque architecture. There was a 'taxi stand' with about 2 dozen shiny bright 1950's cars for hire - even a convertible! We ended at a paladar that the driver recommended. Like most paladars, it only had a dinner type menu - no snacks, sandwiches or little plates, but we split a meal and it was fine. After eating in the air conditioned restaurant, we were ready for a bit more exploring before returning to our casa for the heat of the day. Sandy has made reservations at a highly recommended restaurant for this evening and we may be able to see a flaminco show later on. I think we have found a hotel to do WiFi so maybe I can post things soon.
