Well, we are right here! But we have been the most amazing places since you last heard from us! Let me tell you all about it:
La Parguera, Puerto Rico
Overall, PR was one of our favorite places that we have ever visited. Yes, it is a US territory but it feels far and away from what we know as US soil. First of all the native language is Spanish. No Hablar Español…except for remembrances from an Intro to Foreign Language course Jen took in the 8th grade! Needless to say we did not get too far on the Spanish. Luckily, most folks speak English or are standing near someone who does. La Parguera was a beautiful place. From our assessment it seemed to be a weekend place for locals. The boat traffic was buzzing from Friday thru Sunday. We anchored among the mangroves with an amazing view of the ocean just beyond their borders. The mangroves farther in offered a fun, maze-like tour for the dinghy. Sometimes the path was only wide enough for our little dink and even covered like a canopy overhead. We did not see any manatees this time but this is a prime habitat for them to thrive. The shoreline near town was dotted with brightly colored beach bungalows right on the water. The front porch was also the dock. How handy! In town the locals were very friendly and helpful. We asked at a bar if they had wi-fi and when theirs did not work, the chef set us up next door in the grocery store with a super connection. So there we were, looking like true cruisers: Maxwell on the computer and Jen skyping on the IPod in the middle of the supermarket. In La Parguera we were able to restock on water and fresh food items in preparation for our trip to the Bahamas. So, we were not only Internet hoggers, we were patrons too!
Boqueron, Puerto Rico
We did not do much lookin’ around here. We only went ashore for some Internet and a beer. It seemed like a lively place though. It was the weekend and we were told that this place, like La Parguera, is a weekend hot spot.
We departed Boqueron right after lunch on Monday and set off for Mayaguana, Bahamas. After three days and three nights, humpback whale sightings too close for comfort, 1 mahi mahi, an at sea rescue for a cockpit cushion and a heart-stopping, middle of the night spot-light inspection by a USCG cutter, we arrived in safely to Mayaguana. Greeted by friends, we were really happy to be back in the land of crystal blue water!
We spent the next week with our friends on
Glass Slipper exploring Mayaguana and Samana Cay. They are truly two of the most beautiful and remote places!
Today we are on Crooked Island after a fast sail from Samana. On the trip we hooked a decent black fin tuna too!
We may not be back to the regular schedule of postings because we are still in the outer islands where Internet is very scarce. But the fishing and friendly locals are worth the disconnection!
We have posted some new photos on
SmugMug. Some under
Guadeloupe,
Puerto Rico,
Puerto Rico->Bahamas &
Mayaguana, Samana & Crooked. Sorry but I did not get the whale video uploaded…and there will be more details later…we are so busy enjoying everything!
