A Whale Of A Tail!

20 May 2011

(This post was written right after our passage from Puerto Rico to the Bahamas. This is the first time that I have had a strong enough connection to upload the accompanying video.)

Well the tail is what shows up best on the video! We had just started our passage from Boqueron, Puerto Rico to the Bahamas and knew our chances were high to catch a glimpse of a humpback whale. We were in the Mona Passage and this was the closest of our whale sightings. We are estimating that they were about 75 yards off our starboard quarter. Earlier we had seen some whales far in the distance jumping out of the water and making a huge splash on the horizon. At first, we thought it was another vessel but it kept disappearing. Once we looked through the binoculars we were delighted to see the show.

The two that appeared alongside Anastasia later were quite fascinating but scary at the same time. Since it is mating season we feared the bull might think of us as competition. We’re glad that we were able to get the video to share and enjoy!

Check it out here.
