Safety at Sea Seminar in Annapolis

01 April 2009
Jen
Phenominal. Just phenominal. This past weekend Maxwell and I attended the Safety at Sea Seminar at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD. It was AMAZING! Two full days of extremely interesting lectures on topics ranging from Damage Control to Offshore Sail Inventory to Medical Emergencies at Sea to Weather Awareness.

First of all the Naval Academy is GORGEOUS! The compound is steeped in Naval history that you immediately feel as soon as you pass through the gates. Its is amazing to know that you are stomping around the same grounds where so many distinguished Americans and contributors to our U.S. Navy began their dedicated careers. The flurry of activity all around us was surprising on such a drizzly cold day. The Midshipmen participate in all sorts of athletics and whether it was soccer practice or a track meet...they were everywhere!

We enjoyed real life man-overboard drills performed by the Midshipmen themselves aboard the Navy 44s in the Severn River. Check out the photos below.

Here are a few photos from the liferaft demonstration. I cannot say how reassuring it is to see this happen while there is no ensuing emergency!

Annapolis itself is such a great city! We fall more in love with it each time we visit. Of course it is a huge sailing hub of the east coast. We plan to visit it this summer via water instead of roadway.

What a great weekend to charge our batteries and deepen our excitement (and knowledge base) about the upcoming trip! Truly worth it!
