Sailing, snorkeling, diving
12 March 2009 | Placencia, Belize again
-that is pretty much all we did last week.
We had fun sailing because even when it´s blowing there are no waves. The Barrier Reef that lies about 10 to 20 miles off the coast breaks all the ocean swells. We explored some of the numerous cays that are found between the Barrier Reef and the mainland. A week ago a cold front was approaching and we found protection behind one of the mangrove cays where manatees live. We watched boobies, fregate birds and pelicans. As soon as the trade wind kicked in again we set out to the outer reefs which are lovely sandy patches with an abundance of coconut trees. We found excellent snorkeling sites. What a coincidence- here we met a cruising couple again who had been on Guanaja a while ago. We enjoyed dinner together, the rise of the (almost) full moon and shared some glasses of wine.
Today we sailed only a few miles to Laughing Bird Cay. On the windward side we found a good spot for diving. The visibility wasn´t great but we saw some good-size lobster. They looked yummy -but we left them where they were.
Now we wait for the wind to calm down a bit more so we can head for the outer atolls to - well - explore more of the underwater world.
