Slowing down
27 June 2016 | Baie De Cook, Moorea Island, French Polynesia.
Annie & Cam
Here we are, right in the middle of the Tahiti to Moorea Rendezvous along with 70 other yachts, plus a few other vessels that were already here in Baie De Cook on the island of Moorea. The sail over from Tahiti was not a race, it was just meant to be a friendly sail from one anchorage to the next. We were told to follow a small yellow motor boat for the short passage and at about the half way mark the yellow boat steamed away from the fleet, then we were able to give our boats a clear run to the finish line for the photo shoot that was taking place at the entrance to the bay. We worked our way up to and were holding the position of third overall with about three miles to go and crossed the line in fifth position. We finished in an American sandwich, with two Stars and Stripes boats on either side, a good laugh was had by all, it was not a race haha.
The Rendezvous has been fantastic with traditional dancing by several of the Polynesian island groups, a full on outrigger canoe race that was one of the many highlights of the weekend which we took part in, we managed to finish forth in our heat but unfortunately that was not good enough to get into the finals. Every Captain was presented with a lovely engraved pearl shell donated by Latitude 38 for taking part in the event, plus a lei from the beautiful Miss Moorea. There were representatives from Fiji, New Zealand and Australia, all promoting what was on offer from their respective countries. We purchased a 'haul out and splash' at the Vuda Point Marina in Fiji to touch up our anti-foul paint on Annecam before sailing to Australia later this year. I would like to encourage every yacht that is heading this way to join this event to be able to see first hand what we call making landfall in paradise is really like, the Pacific Puddle Jump web page will give you all of the links to what we have experienced.
It finally looks like my leg is on the mend, it still looks very ugly with skin falling off like you wouldn't believe, so with a little luck we might be able to continue our journey back to Australia.
