Back in civilization
20 June 2017 | Gladstone Marina, Capricornia Coast, Queensland, Australia
Cam "H"
After a lovely quiet, eight days anchored in Pancake Creek we are now back in civilization, in the Gladstone Marina. Our first night here we managed to find our way up into the city and into the Reef Hotel where we had a belated birthday dinner for Annies birthday.
The passage from Pancake Creek to where we are now involved contacting the Gladstone Harbour Control before entering the shipping channel, we made contact via VHF channel 13, it is a safety requirement as they gave us the number and names of the commercial ships that we will be sharing the shipping channel with, we had several of these monster bulk carriers to stay clear of as we sailed into the port. As Annie said that these ships are big scary buggers, they don’t change direction as fast as we do but they move at about twice the speed as us.
Yesterday we jumped on board the marina courtesy bus to do a little shopping, we were dropped off along with several other cruisers at one of the many shopping complexes here in Gladstone and after a stroll around through the usual Kmart, Target and Coles supermarket we stopped for lunch at the Burger Urge, one of the many eateries inside this shopping complex. Our objective for the day was to restock our food supplies on board Annecam and were in the right place to make this happen. Our bus driver Graham was a real nice guy, he said that he loves boats that much that he owns several of them, from what he calls his small creek boat to a yacht, he loves his fishing, shooting and all thing outdoors.
Our rough plans are to leave here this week to keep moving north, up into the tropics as we are now only about 24 nautical miles south of the Tropic of Capricorn. So we will be soon up where the crocodiles live and among a host of other nasty critters that we can find here in Australia, note to self, keep the GoPro handy to make sure we capture the moment, haha.
The photo is a capture of a video we took as we sailed into the Port of Gladstone.
