Pie in the Sky
05 November 2010 | En Route Opua Day 6
November 5
Transfer of 20 gallons of diesel yesterday was achieved in two meter swell by retrieving four 5 gallon jerry jugs towed behind donor on polypropylene line at ten foot intervals. It was a masterful exercise in seamanship, coordination and barking lunacy. Ability to run auxiliary as necessary is now assured. Credit and gratitude to principals and crew of Freezing Rain for assistance above and beyond. Fuel was put to good use as high revs were necessary to maintain position with others through inert air.
Resurgent breeze at 0400 brought excellent sailing all day as promised front approached. The "Zorro" gambit has been initiated to sail SW until frontal passage, SE until wind passes through bow as it continues to back, then SW rhumbline into Opua. Currently on second leg with conditions less favorable than forecast. This three day maneuver is designed to secure arrival in harbor by midday Monday and pecan pie should be more healthy than broccoli. One of those may be possible.
