Abermarle Sound on our Back Door

03 November 2012 | Alligator River Marina, Columbia NC
COLD!!
We woke this morning to a 42F reading on the themomoter & frost on the docks. Not my idea of fun!!
But, by 8:00am the sun was out & although it was cold the winds were very light so it was bearable. (My four layers of clothing from yesterday grew to six today.)
Our bridge timing was perfect & before we knew it we had passed into North Carolina & were passing Coinjock (MM50) which was our planned destination. Not wanting to stop at 12:30pm we decided to push on and cross Abermarle Sound as we had light winds from the WNW, creating ideal conditions for this crossing which can be very rough. Abermarle Sound is a wide body of water running east to the Outer Banks of North Carolina & is very shallow so it turns nasty very quickly. The most water we saw for the 15mile crossing was 12.5 feet.
Our crossing was very uneventful & before we knew it we were making our way into the Alligator River to the Marina. We were securely tied & the boat shipshape by 4:00pm, all in all a very good day.
Tonight is home cooking again, by not stopping in Coinjock I missed my roast beef dinner the captain had promised so I will hold him to his promise of Snow Crabs, maybe Sunday night if my restaurant research is sucessful.
All in all a very good day & both the captain & I are happy that Abermarle Sound is behind us. Tomorrow we will push on to Belhaven, a 52 mile run with hopefully a bit warmer temps.
