Hell's Gate

26 July 2010 | New York
It pays to travel with a Harbor Pilot. We drove through Hell's Gate this morning like white water rafting at 11 knots. Who said our hull speed was 8 knots?
Our first stop in Long Island Sound was Lloyd's Neck Anchorage. What a beautiful place for a shoal draft boat! The entrance is a zig-zag between the beach and a rock wall that can only be made at high tide. The anchorage has deep water in the center. A local boat leaving the anchorage informed us to only stay for an hour or wait until the next high tide. The entrance would be impassable at low tide. Local knowledge is priceless.
We had lunch there, took the dogs ashore and left promptly.
