A hike up Mt st Catherine

10 December 2009 | Mt St Catherine
Devi
Time to load up your pack on put on your mud sneakers we are going for a hike. At 2,757 feet, Mt St. Catherine is the highest peak in Grenada. We were joined by Chuck and Barb on Tusen Takk II, Ann and Steve on Receta and Ann and Jim on Bees Knees.
The large size of the group made travel by local bus awkward, but favorable for sharing the cost of a rental car. In our rented van we drove past Grenville to the town of Paraclete. At Paraclete we turned off onto a road that headed to the NW towards the Cable and Wireless antenna. We drove as far as we could in the two wheel drive vehicle and walked the remaining 1.5 miles uphill to the C&W cell tower. At the SW corner of the tower pad we located a small, but distinct trail that headed in the right direction. The trail was muddy and brushy, but little did we know that that this was the good part of the trail. The guys took turns with machetes up front and for the next three hours we scrambled, slithered and pulled ourselves uphill. This trek was more of a scramble than hike. The trail was very muddy and steep and overgrown with vegetation.

Ann (Receta) is in four wheel drive
