I am writing to you from Florida. Two weeks ago I received word from my sister that my father had a stroke and was in the hospital. I caught the next flight out of St. Lucia and joined my family in Sarasota.
Dad is in rehab and is due to be released in three days. His speech and cognitive abilities were not affected. His left arm and leg were partially paralyzed by the stroke so his rehab has centered on re-establishing the brain muscle connection to the left side. Every day he has shown great improvement and the staff rave about his tenaciousness about getting his abilities back. Meantime Mom succumbed to stress and developed a bleeding ulcer. After a 911 trip to the hospital and a few days there, she is also in rehab to build her strength and walking abilities. Yes, they are in the same facility. Time will tell what changes my parents will need to make in their lives, but it seems likely some changes will be necessary.
Hunter prepared the boat and left it in St. Lucia. It is really nice to have his support. It is good to be with my family at this time and I am enjoying a few luxuries like large flat surfaces for yoga practice and National Public Radio.
