Zen and the Art of Varnishing

For the most part I really enjoy doing my boat chores. I cannot say that I love living on a sailboat out of water, but that phase passes fast and this year we had good weather for bottom painting and got our “on the hard” chores done in record time. We moved over to Coral Cove Marina and continued with prepping the boat for anther season on sailing in the Caribbean. All of the sails have been to the shop and had minor repairs. Many of the lines have been replaced as part of cyclic maintenance. We decided to sand and varnish the teak toe rail and it shines brightly.
We had a very nice sail from Trinidad to Grenada. We started from Scotland Bay at 1:00 in the morning and the sky was very clear. I do not remember ever seeing a night sky so starry in humid Trinidad. The phosphorescence made a trail as I brought up the anchor and continued through the night in a wake behind the boat.
The hard part was saying goodbye to dear friends that we might not see again. The plan is to sail the boat to Florida and put her up for sail. In the meantime we will enjoy our last lap of the eastern Caribbean.
