Wax apples

04 June 2008 | Young Island, St. Vincent

Last year we were in a small fresh food market in St. Kitts and saw this fruit. We asked the name of the fruit and the man said "wox opple". After a bit of puzzling we figured out that he said wax apple. We enjoyed the crisp and slightly tart fruit and kept an eye out for them as we moved south. Wax apple season passed along with the mango and avocado season. We have started to see wax apples again- along with mangos and avocados. Yesterday Hunter and I went to the fresh fruit and vegetable market in Kingstown, the capitol of St. Vincent and saw lots of wax apples. I asked a fruit vendor what the season is for wax apples and she said that she did not know because that fruit did not exist when she was a child. She had just returned from 15 years in Canada and was surprised to see this new fruit. Wax apples are imported from East Asia. The locals say is came from Taiwan and I think that assumption is made because there is a strong partner ship with St. Vincent and Taiwan. Taiwan is helping fund a new International Airport in St. Vincent.

In between trips to town and doing the usual boat errands we are getting ready for Brooke and Woody, Hunter's sister and brother in law. On Saturday they will arrive from North Carolina and we are so excited
