Los Nevados is perched at 8858 feet. There are several small settlements within a days walk and the people in this valley of the Rio Nuestra Senora are farmers. This is potato and wheat country. Everyone has a small cornfield and a variety of other crops as well as specialty items such a mint. There were stone threshing circles that were used to thresh wheat with horses or mules. The roadsides were covered with blackberries and they were ripe!
We arrived on Saturday and on Sunday we noticed that the population of town more that doubled. Sunday is the day for the folks in the neighboring settlements to come to town, socialize and pickup staple food items, such as oil, sugar and coffee.
