Ile au Coudre
23 July 2017
Up and at it at 630 for morning coffee and bringing up the anchor. Weather looked good and the winds hinted they might cooperate. We had to go 55 miles to the fiercest currents on the St Lawrence other than Richelieu Rapids above Quebec. The main was up before the anchor. Off we went about 2 hours before low tide. Hoping to be able to ride the tide. We ran up the south channel past Riviere du Loup and the Kamaraska area. We were doing well and the wind was helping for once. All sails up ad motoring. We began to get encouraged. Will it hold? Will we arrive? We decided to take the shortest straightest line to Ile au Coudre, home of the fierce currents. For once the wind cooperated and we had a beautiful motor sail, seldom below 5 knots and hints of 7/8. There were belugas everywhere in the south channel. Mostly females with calves. We could see the calves surface as if they were sticking to their mother's bodies. Aafter about 4 hours the currents/tide started to work in our favour and harmonized with the wind. We were on a sled ride now seeing most speeds up to over 9 knots. There is a god! We made it to Ile au Coudre in 8.5 hours when the books said 11 hours. Because we left before the tide at Cacouna we arrived in the current pushing us up to the anchorage and over 9 knots without sails. After a few minutes avoiding the two car ferries we found the anchorage and tried to set anchor. The current was still running 4 knots but after one move we got an anchor down. We will set the second anchor after the change of tide. At high tide we are anchored in 30 feet of water. I am trying to get this posted before dinner so you might hear about that tomorrow when we try a run to Quebec City. It will be another tidal surf we hope with help from wind.
