Five Days Aground... And Counting

11 February 2017 | West End, Bahamas
Michael
No, not us. There but for the grace of God go I; "Grace" and a big-ass anchor.

This unfortunate fellow is facing his fifth night aground on a shoal at West End, having dragged anchor during the night. A salvage crew worked the full moon high tide with three boats and a dozen hands and could not budge him. It's going to take a first-rate salvage crew, thousands of dollars plus thousands more to repair significant damage to his boat.

This was Day 1 of his Bahamas Cruise.

I don't question the decisions of another captain, but this stands as a cautionary tale to anyone who cruises these waters in a private boat. Paradise can become Hell with a single, midnight thump on one's hull.

UPDATE: The Captain donated his boat to the islanders and flew home. The locals had it off the shoal the next day.

This album covers a lot of sailing. First we sailed Aria from Little River to Nassau with Tom Leonard and Gary Miller. Later, while I remained aboard Aria, the family plus my old college pal, Larry Knipp, joined me at various times throughout the winter.

Instead of a bushing, I used two custom-made steel plates to repair an elongated hole that supports the alternator.

The boat was in Milford, CT when I bought it. We sailed it home... well, motored mostly, as there was no wind, and we got the mainsail jammed in the mast on the first day. We came ashore in Atlantic City to take on more fuel.
