In Cook's Footsteps
20 May 2013 | Pancake Creek
Val and Rick
As it was too cold to get out of bed at 5.00am in Bundaberg, Lady Musgrave was given the Big A and a very poor plan B was hatched. Much against Rick's better judgment we decided to visit 1770, Captain Cook's first landfall in Qld. We arrived on the high tide and had no difficulty crossing the bar and then the fun began. 1770 or Round Hill Creek as it is also known, has a severe insufficiency of water and Arkaydes only draws 1.15 metres! After trying to anchor off the caravan park, we bumped around the creek edges until finally anchoring next to the Lady Musgrave tourist catamaran. We anchored with 5'2" under the keel with the tide due to drop another 3'. Definitely not an ideal anchorage, a few calming beverages were consumed.
Left the next day at 2.00pm after trying to buy a few staples at the marina and caravan store without a lot of success but Rick did manage to buy a slab of beer from The Trees Cafe owned by a really nice guy called Wayne originally, from Dee Why. Quite a stressful exit even on a nearly full tide.
Luckily Pancake Creek was only 12 miles away and we were anchored again by 4.20pm in plenty of water. It is a very picturesque and comfortable anchorage.
We are currently in the outer anchorage in readiness for a 5.00am departure to either Great Keppel or Rosslyn Bay Marina tomorrow.
