Swan Point to just past Masonboro Inlet

We spent a really pleasant Thursday evening at Swan Point Marina & Boat Yard, which is owned and run by two women - Tina and her mother, Evelyn.
They've had the business for about a year, Tina told me. She said it came about because her step-father had his boat pulled out at the boatyard. She and her mom refinished all the brightwork. The marina was closed at the time and they often wished they could buy something they needed or just get a snack to tide them over. They told the owner several times that he should reopen and finally he told them they were the ones who should reopen it.
After some thought, they decided to do just that. They also took over the boatyard. Tina says she's still got lots to learn, but she has great help from boating friends.
The facilities had suffered while the marina was closed and while they're a bit "rustic" as Evelyn says, they are clean and attractive. The location is great, just off the waterway. But the attraction for Swan Point Marina is the service, which can't be beat.
I borrowed the marina's car to go grocery shopping and when I returned, Tina dispatched two friends to carry my groceries to the boat, despite howls of protest from me. Finally, I could tell I was up against southern good manners and accepted the inevitable with many thanks.
As an added bonus, Robert was in the office when a couple on a large motor yacht asked if they could get fresh shrimp. The answer was yes and Robert was able to put in an order for us. Soon Evelyn had delivered fresh shrimp from a local business for $5 a pound, making for a special dinner treat. We watched a beautiful moonrise as we ate in the cockpit.
We left this morning, Friday, about 8:30 a.m. and spent the day motoring along a scenic section of the waterway past a patchwork of marshes and small islands woven together by tidal creeks and inlets.
We had to wait for three bridge openings and timed two of them badly, so we spent about two hours motoring in circles waiting. The strong current made just sitting still not an option.
Tonight we are tied up at the Masonboro Yacht Club and Marina.

While we were at Ocracoke in early June, we visited Portsmouth Island for the first time. The State of North Carolina purchased the island in the 1970s and deeded it to the Federal Government for inclusion in Cape Lookout National Seashore. But for more than 200 years, it was home to a coastal community. Some homes, the school and the Methodist Church still stand on the island which can be reached only by boat.
