Finally Leaving the Solitude of South River

Today we finally got underway. We were up at first light and had breakfast while the sun rose. It took me a while to retrieve the tandem anchor system, not because it was so firmly set, but because there was so much mud on the chain and anchors. In fact, the Fortress never did set deeply into the mud; therefore, we must have held just fine on the CQR alone. However, you will never find me apologizing for leaning toward excess when it comes to ground tackle. Overkill helps me to sleep at night.

It was a cool morning on the Neuse, but I suppose that is why we are heading this boat south. The trip was an uneventful motor-driven experience the entire way. Current helped us along the ICW, keeping average speeds above 6.5 knots. Therefore, we arrived at Town Creek (our intended anchorage) just a little after noon.

We spent the afternoon tidying up the boat and getting reacquainted with our old friend, the internet. Absence of the ability to connect to the net any time we wish may be the most difficult aspect of this lifestyle.

We reviewed the weather and we think that we have settled upon a plan which would find us offshore by this time tomorrow evening. Of course, 24-hours can change a person's mind (or a forecast), so stay tuned for updates.

This blog starts in 2005, when we initially had the idea to quit our jobs and live on a sailboat while we cruised to the Caribbean. At that time we had never owned a boat and had no experience sailing. [...]
