We have done a lot of snorkeling over the course of the past few months, and the sensation never ceases to amaze me. It feels like flying. Flying in an alien world. Just lift your head out of the water, and you are back in our world. But, as long as you are under the surface, you are a visitor in
their universe. We spent this morning in an aquatic cosmos, soaring over coral communities along with schools of colorful fellow flyers.
We avoided the more dangerous denizens of the deep...
...and marveled at the graceful manner in which some performed their aerial navigation.
We are always on the lookout for new species to add to our 'collection' of underwater creatures viewed. On this foray, Sheryl photographed a group of Caribbean Reef Squid.
These incredible cephalopods displayed an interesting behavior, in that they all hovered in a straight line (a group of about a dozen of them). As we swam through their ranks, they would retreat using their side swimming fins. All the while keeping their eyes and tentacles pointed back in our direction. Once we had passed, they reformed their straight line orientation.
