The Fleet Goes Out Again for Another Introduction to Culebra

21 March 2008 | Dewey, Culebra, Puerto Rico
CURRENT LOCATION: Anchored in Ensenada Honda, off the town of Dewey, on the island of Culebra, Puerto Rico

18 18.245' N, 065 17.867' W

With the current state of BIG north swell, taking Prudence out for a spin with our non-sailing guests, Nydia and Jesse, was not an option we were entertaining for today's activities. Instead, we deployed the kayaks and dinghy, loaded up with snorkel gear, and headed to the west side of the island.

Sheryl and Nydia took the kayaks for the outbound journey. A portion of the swell had wrapped around the island, but the southernmost end of our snorkeling region was still tenable. We tied the fleet up to a mooring ball and shared the 'other world' with our guests. The fish seemed to be more active today than we have seen on previous snorkel excursions. Perhaps it is the swell, or maybe the overcast skies? In any case, it helped to make up for the slightly diminished visibility resulting from both of those factors.

Jesse and I took up the kayak challenge for the return trip. Having never been in a kayak before, Jesse quickly found a comfortable paddle pace and was truly enjoying himself. He didn't even complain when the winds picked up and we had to work our way upwind against some considerable chop. We all made it back to the big boat and enjoyed snacks, sundowners and eventually dinner. Our guests were sporting a few blisters from the novelty of the day's exertions, but their smiles remained undiminished. A dinghy ride in the dark returned them to their hotel room, to seek rest for yet another day in Paradise.

About:
We are Doug & Sheryl, owners and crew of the sailing vessel Prudence.

This blog starts in 2005, when we initially had the idea to quit our jobs and live on a sailboat while we cruised to the Caribbean. At that time we had never owned a boat and had no experience sailing. [...]
