26 NOV 2017 -- Sunday – Cumberland Island to St. Augustine FL (outside)
WE rose early, and pulled up the anchor before first light. By the time first light (about 25 min. before sunrise) occurred we were halfway out of the Cumberland Island anchorage… and going into the Kings Bay ship channel.
We were trying to catch the last of the EBB tide, and indeed we did. The ebbing current pushed us out of the St. Mary’s Inlet at above 7 knots. NICE. The remainder of the day was so pleasant it’s almost unbelievable… 1 to 2 foot waves, on top of very small swell from the NE. Not too much wind… but enough to keep a full Yankee sail filled and drawing…. But still requiring the motor to make the 50 some nautical miles to St. Augustine in the day light…. (not one of the inlet’s buoys are LIT at night…. And they move quite a bit with shoals… so it’s really not something you’d prefer to do after dark.).
We called St. Augustine Municipal Marina about halfway here, to see if there were moorings available… YOU MUST reserve… That’s their way here!!!
WE got M-28 for two nights…Yeah!!! Susan picked it up on the first try… excellent job, in the current, and afternoon wind.
We’re at N29 53.286 W081 18.393 after 58.4 nm of travel today (easy miles in the ocean).
We dumped the dinghy over the side, and went into the office to pay; then to O.C. Whites for appetizers and drinks.
Now we’re back on AB… I sat out on the “porch” (aft deck) with a small glass of rum for about 20 minutes; St. Augustine is very festive with white lights on everything; buildings, poles, bridges, etc. Wonderful.
