St. Vincent

02 May 2008
Bryan
On leaving Bequia, we had two choices - work to windward of St. Vincent and make the run all the way to St. Lucia with a better angle to the wind, or have an easy sail up the leeward side of St. Vincent and stop there for the night leaving a shorter sail to St. Lucia but at a much less favorable angle to the wind. Being lazy and not having had an easy sail for some time, we chose the latter, hoping the winds would favor us the next day. They didn't. But we didn't know that then and had a lovely sail for a change and stopped at Walliabou, St. Vincent. Walliabou is now known as one of the locations used in the Pirates of the Caribbean movie series. Most of the sets and props were left behind and are still in place to draw in the tourists. We actually chose Waliabou because it is the most northerly anchorage we can clear out of with customs.
We took a mile long walk inland to a stream with a pool and waterfalls and had a swim. The island looks every bit a jungle with all its mountainous terrain and exotic vegetation. Fruit trees were everywhere - mango, banana, papaya, guava, star fruit, bread fruit, orange, sapodilla. Between the fruit trees were all manner of flowering trees, air roots and vines hanging down from great heights, and smaller broad leaf plants like Elephant Ear. Though there were tons of birds making a great backdrop of noises, they were surprisingly small and drab looking. I expected them to look more like birds of paradise or toucans or something.
We left at 0'dark 30 for St. Lucia.
